Happy year of the Ox! Need to HIRE artist

Mon Jan 26, 2009, 7:10 PM
Love an excuse to cook up a lot of Chinese food and eat pocky.

So my goals for the year.

1. Improve my demo reel and get a job
2. Exercise
3. Daily scripture study
4. Learn Japanese
5. Make an awesome manga/comic and write

So I'm trying to get a more professional reel done. Show off my work better, and fix and finish my best works. i also want to learn 3DS MAX and MAYA, but so hard to get myself to learn them without a teacher. I have trouble inspiring myself to learn form books, even if they are good books. Sigh. Oh well, I'll just have to push myself. Maybe a bribe of ice cream or something. ;)

I wish you all a good year!
Love Eileen

I'm also looking to hire an artist to do some character profile pages in a "T" stance for me. Can't spend much and would prefer to do their own characters for free reference images and gift of the object. See previous journal for details.

  • Mood: Hope
  • Listening to: Naruto
  • Reading: storm warning
  • Watching: one piece...i dont believe it
  • Playing: little big planet
  • Eating: nothing
  • Drinking: nothing

I'm very much not an artist - but you'll see that for yourself in a moment. Well, here's a T pose of a character, hope it helps.

Sorry about the quality (I rushed towards the end), and sorry it's a bit cut off, (I was assuming you'd be working w/ symmetry tools or something)

I think I might be able to help in terms of MAX, but I'm no teacher myself. I've got no formal education under my belt (I'm "self taught" ... actually the default MAX tutorials and some ones by other people taught me :D), but if you have any questions (general UI, tips, what have you), feel free to note me. Just keep in mind that I'm still kind of a noob, but a picture would probably be a better way to show you what kind of advice you could expect from me

[link] (no recent 3D work in my gallery) - I'd post a wireframe view too, but photobucket's being kinda moody right now o_O'

thankyou so much! Its very welcome, so whats your fav tutorial online?

Cool! As for favorite tutorial online, that's a bit hard to answer. I just pick up a few small points from here and there, for whatever I need - (i.e. bloom effect, how to model a hand, UVW tips, design, modeling low poly hair, etc...) and a lot of these aren't necessarily program-specific (i.e. they might not necessarily help you out with MAX or MAYA interfaces). But if you're looking to start off, here are a few:

[link] (Arild Wiro's site. I used to like this site, not to say that it's not good, but... felt a little bit too specific and tends to be more high poly than low poly)

[link] (Try not to be weirded out by the site name. Ben Mathis's art style isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but he has some good points and tutorials to take into account)

[link] (Neil Blevins doesn't really cover things like character modeling or what not - but a lot of it is design approach - some foundational art/design principles. Do NOT just brush over it, there's some really good points in there. Though it's more theoretical, he does show you the technical how-to for the points he brings up - good read, I highly recommend it)

[link] (I just found Athey Moravetz's site the other day when I was looking for ... something. I don't remember what. But she has a good collection of tutorials on a number of subjects - optimizing polys, edge loops, creative ways to create quads and what not.)

All of these... except maybe for Neil Blevins' site... have something about character modeling. It's always useful since I consider character modeling to be much more complicated than environment or object modeling (I mean no offense at all >_< - but you probably don't need to worry as much about edge loops and proper deforming with less... organic... objects). It's helpful to see how other people do it, it seriously is. In any case, they're all good sites... I think I should know more... but they're not coming to mind so far.

Other than that - I just google whatever else I need and hope I get something good.

OOOOOO thanks for the links! Excellent.....
